Press Release
On the occasion of GST Day, marking three years since the rollout of Goods and Services Tax on 1 July 2017, the Hon’ble Minister of State for Finance reflected on the journey, achievements, and future direction of GST in India. The message notes that GST has fundamentally transformed the indirect tax landscape by subsuming multiple taxes into a single levy and giving practical shape to the vision of “One Nation, One Tax.” Over the past three years, GST has helped unify the national market, simplified movement of goods through the introduction of e-way bills, reduced logistics time and costs, and enhanced transparency through technology-driven, faceless, and electronic compliance systems. The Minister highlighted the effective use of information technology platforms for return filing and refund processing, which has improved ease of compliance for taxpayers. The message also acknowledged the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and appreciated the efforts of CBIC officers who ensured continuity of tax administration, timely processing of GST refunds to support liquidity, and humanitarian assistance to underprivileged persons and stranded migrant workers during the lockdown. While recognising the progress made in simplifying tax administration, the Minister emphasised that further reforms are needed, particularly in making return filing simpler, speeding up input tax credit processing, and strengthening taxpayer facilitation. The message concluded by congratulating tax officers, taxpayers, and stakeholders on the GST journey so far and expressed confidence that continued cooperation would contribute to building a self-reliant “Atmanirbhar Bharat.”
