Gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue collection for April 2022 reached an all-time high of ₹1.67 lakh crore, marking the highest monthly collection since the introduction of GST and exceeding the previous record by nearly ₹25,000 crore. The April collections comprised ₹33,159 crore as CGST, ₹41,793 crore as SGST, ₹81,939 crore as IGST, including ₹36,705 crore from imports, and ₹10,649 crore as compensation cess. After regular settlement, the Centre and States received ₹66,582 crore and ₹68,755 crore respectively. The revenue for April 2022 was 20 percent higher than the corresponding month of the previous year, driven by a 30 percent increase in collections from imports and a 17 percent rise in domestic transactions, including import of services. Notably, April 2022 marked the first time that monthly GST collections crossed the ₹1.5 lakh crore threshold, reflecting a strong rebound in economic activity. Compliance indicators also showed significant improvement, with 1.06 crore GSTR-3B returns and 1.05 crore GSTR-1 statements filed during the month, alongside a 13 percent increase in e-way bill generation in March 2022. The press release also highlighted record-breaking single-day and single-hour tax payments on 20 April 2022, underscoring enhanced digital compliance, improved enforcement, and the effectiveness of data-driven tax administration measures.
