Press Release
Gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue collection for May 2022 stood at ₹1,40,885 crore, registering a sharp year-on-year growth of 44 percent and marking the fourth occasion since the introduction of GST that monthly collections crossed the ₹1.40 lakh crore mark, as well as the third consecutive month of such high collections since March 2022. The May collections comprised ₹25,036 crore as CGST, ₹32,001 crore as SGST, ₹73,345 crore as IGST, including ₹37,469 crore from imports, and ₹10,502 crore as compensation cess. During the month, the Centre settled ₹27,924 crore to CGST and ₹23,123 crore to SGST from IGST, resulting in post-settlement revenues of ₹52,960 crore for the Centre and ₹55,124 crore for the States. In addition, GST compensation amounting to ₹86,912 crore was released to States and Union Territories on 31 May 2022, providing significant fiscal support. The strong revenue performance was driven by buoyant economic activity, with GST collections from imports rising by 43 percent and those from domestic transactions, including import of services, increasing by 44 percent compared to May 2021. Despite May traditionally being a lower collection month due to return cycles, the sustained high revenue levels underscore improved compliance, effective enforcement measures, and continued economic recovery.
